Hooghly district in West Bengal is the most famous potato-producing area in India, contributing approximately 40% of West Bengal's total potato production according to Government of India and ICAR-CPRI data. West Bengal itself accounts for about 15% of India's total potato production (approximately 8 million tonnes).
However, several other cities and districts have gained prominence for specialized potato production:
Agra in Uttar Pradesh leads the largest potato-producing state, where UP produces about 35% of India's potatoes (approximately 15 million tonnes). Other major UP districts include Mathura, Mainpuri, Farrukhabad, and Etawah, making the Agra region central to India's overall potato supply.
Banaskantha district in Gujarat has emerged as India's French fry processing hub, with widespread adoption of drip irrigation boosting yields. Gujarat is positioning itself as a key player in the processing sector.
For seed potato production, Amritsar, Kapurthala, and Jalandhar in Punjab are famous as the "engine of India's planting cycles." Punjab produces approximately 0.6 million tonnes of high-quality seed potatoes annually from over 32,000 hectares, supplying seed stock across major potato-growing belts nationwide.
Bhopal, Ujjain, and Indore in Madhya Pradesh are gaining recognition for leading India's snack food revolution with high-solids crisping potatoes, particularly varieties like Kufri Chandramukhi and Kufri Lavkar suitable for chips.
