The total value of global potato trade reached approximately $22.8 billion in 2023, according to Tendata trade data and FAO sources. This represents significant growth in the global potato economy.
The trade breaks down into two main segments with dramatically different growth trajectories. Raw potato exports totaled $6.2 billion in 2023, showing a 16.7% increase from $5.3 billion in 2022 and 19.5% growth over five years from $5.2 billion in 2019. However, the prepared and preserved potato segment dominates with $16.6 billion in exports in 2023, having grown an impressive 59.3% over five years.
FAO and CIP data provides a broader range estimate of $22-25 billion annually when including fresh potatoes ($3-4 billion), frozen processed potatoes ($16-18 billion), and seed potatoes ($1.5-2 billion). The frozen potato segment alone accounts for $13 billion in exports according to FAOSTAT, with frozen French fries being a major driver of this growth.
The processed potato segment is expanding much faster than raw exports, driven by global fast food chain expansion, growing middle classes in Asia and Africa, and urbanization creating demand for convenient foods. China and India are emerging as major frozen fry exporters, while cold chain infrastructure improvements in developing countries support continued growth in this lucrative processed segment.
