Uttar Pradesh is India's largest potato producer, contributing 20.126 million tonnes in 2023-24, which represents 33.46% of the country's total potato production according to the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.
The state cultivates potatoes across over 600,000 hectares, with production concentrated in key districts including Agra, Mathura, Mainpuri, Farrukhabad, Etawah, Kanpur, Aligarh, and Meerut. Uttar Pradesh leads "by a wide margin" compared to other states, with West Bengal ranking second at 14.508 million tonnes (24.12%) and Bihar third at 9.075 million tonnes (15.09%).
Uttar Pradesh's dominance stems from its location in the Indo-Gangetic Plain, which accounts for over 80% of India's total potato production. The state has developed a dense network of mandis, cold storage facilities, and established farmer communities. Farmers primarily grow popular varieties including Kufri Chandramukhi, Kufri Chipsona, Kufri Sindhuri, Kufri Pukhraj, Kufri Bahar, and Kufri Jyoti as a rabi crop, planting from October-November and harvesting from February-March.
