The US exported $2.3 billion worth of potatoes in the July 2023-June 2024 period, reaching a record high with 4.0% growth according to global trade data. This represented 3.3 million metric tons in volume.
The export composition is dominated by frozen products, which account for 64% of total export value ($1.5 billion and 1.5 million metric tons). Fresh potatoes make up 14% of exports at $327.9 million and 611,461 metric tons, followed by dehydrated potatoes at 11% ($263.1 million), potato chips at 10% ($225.2 million), and seed potatoes at just 1% ($15.4 million).
Mexico leads as the top export destination at $549 million, followed by Japan at $460 million and Canada at $346 million, according to the NPC 2025 Annual Potato Yearbook. These three markets account for the majority of US potato exports. The Asia-Pacific region represents a critical market cluster, with six countries (Japan, South Korea, Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong) among the top 10 destinations.
The US potato industry's total economic contribution reaches $100.9 billion, with exports representing a significant component of the sector that supports over 714,000 domestic jobs across production, processing, and retail segments.
