Production is heavily concentrated in northern states, with Uttar Pradesh leading at 20.126 million tonnes (33.46% of national production) in 2023-24, followed by West Bengal at approximately 23% of total production, and Bihar. The Indo-Gangetic Plain accounts for over 80% of national production, with 85% grown as a rabi (winter) crop. India cultivates potatoes across approximately 2.2-2.3 million hectares with an average national yield of 25 tonnes per hectare, supporting over 45 million potato farmers according to CPRI Shimla data.
