Industrial Scale and Efficiency: Belgium processes 5.3-5.5 million tonnes of raw potatoes annually across 15+ major facilities, producing approximately 2.8 million tonnes of frozen fries per year. This massive processing capacity far exceeds domestic potato production of 4.5 million tonnes, requiring substantial imports from France, Netherlands, and Germany. The Westhoek region in West Flanders serves as the epicenter, with five major plants concentrated within just 30 kilometers.

Major Processing Giants: Belgium hosts some of Europe's largest processors. Clarebout Potatoes processes 1.5 million tonnes annually from its Nieuwkerke facility, while Agristo operates 600,000+ tonnes capacity across multiple Belgian plants. Other major players include Mydibel Group (400,000 tonnes), Farm Frites Belgium, and McCain's Lutosa facility. These companies have built Belgium's reputation for high-quality frozen fries exported to over 150 countries.

Strategic Location and Growth: The industry's explosive growth since the 1990s positioned Belgium perfectly to serve European and global markets. According to Eurostat data, Belgium and the Netherlands together produce more than half of all frozen potato products in Europe. Belgian frites are even recognized by UNESCO as part of the country's intangible cultural heritage, cementing the cultural foundation of this industrial success.
