Global potato production reached 383 million metric tons in 2023, representing a 7 million metric ton increase from 376 million metric tons in 2022 (FAOSTAT 2023). This growth occurred despite harvested area declining from 18.1 million hectares in 2022 to 16.8 million hectares in 2023, indicating significant yield improvements across major producing regions.
Top Producing Countries (2023):
China leads global production with 93.5 million metric tons, representing 24.4% of world output. India follows with 60.1 million metric tons (15.7% of global production). The top 10 is rounded out by Ukraine (21.4 million metric tons), United States (19.9 million metric tons), Russia (19.4 million metric tons), Germany (11.6 million metric tons), Bangladesh (10.4 million metric tons), France (8.6 million metric tons), Pakistan (8.3 million metric tons), and Egypt (6.9 million metric tons).
Regional Distribution (2023):
Asia dominates with 175.8 million metric tons (46% of global production), followed by Europe at 47.2 million metric tons, North America at 28.5 million metric tons, Africa at 16.9 million metric tons, South America with an estimated 15-16 million metric tons, and Oceania contributing 1.89 million metric tons. According to CIP analysis, developing countries now produce more than half of global potato output, reversing the historical dominance of Europe and North America.
The data shows potato maintains its position as the world's third most important food crop after rice and wheat, feeding more than one billion people globally across production zones spanning from sea level to 4,700 meters altitude.
