Ireland's potato production has fluctuated considerably over the past decade and a half. Peak production occurred in 2017 at 6.22 million tonnes, while the lowest point was 4.55 million tonnes in 2012. The country has maintained relatively stable production levels between 5-6 million tonnes in most years, with occasional dips due to weather or other factors.
The production is achieved on approximately 118,407 hectares of harvested area as of 2024, with yields of 46,581 kg per hectare - one of the higher yield rates in recent years. Ireland's potato farming has become increasingly efficient, with yields generally ranging between 36,000-47,000 kg/ha over the past decade.
Despite this substantial domestic production, Ireland remains a net importer of potatoes. FAOSTAT Food Balance data shows Ireland imported 373,000 tonnes in 2023 while exporting only 38,000 tonnes, indicating strong domestic demand that exceeds local production capacity for certain market segments.
